In the 1980s I spent many years working with physically and/or mentally handicapped people at a number of Leonard Cheshire Homes. I developed some of the first software to enable severely handicapped people to communicate. One of the first things I discovered was that many of them wished they could draw and paint again but were convinced this could never happen.
Well, maybe not until computers came along. We built some simple single- and double-switch controls that could be operated with toes, heels, elbows, a mouthstick or whatever, and then proceeded to write the drawing program Rainbow which you see reviewed here by Learning to Cope magazine.
After this review we seemed to be sending out hundreds of copies of this program each month - for which we only charged enough to cover the costs. You see the printouts below? They were all made by severely disabled people. This is one of the programs I am proudest to have written. |
